On this day when we remember the events of 9/11/2001 and I personally remember the almost surreal quiet as I drove across the American Legion Bridge from Maryland to Virginia and could see the smoke rising that I knew was from the Pentagon, I want to remember some other 9:11s...
Matthew 9:11
And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
What's happening:
The Pharisees are questioning Jesus' spending time with people he shouldn't. His reply in verses 12-13 "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."
What this means for me:
Jesus came for ME!
Mark 9:11
And they asked him, "Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?"
What's happening:
Jesus has been transfigured and His disciples have seent Elijah and Moses with Him. Jesus' response in verses 12-13 basically says that John the Baptist was Elijah preparing the way for Jesus.
What this means for me:
Jesus is the Messiah!
Luke 9:11
When the crowds learned it, they followed him, and he welcomed them and spoke to them of the kingdom of God and cured those who had need of healing.
What's happening:
The 12 have returned after having had Jesus send them out "to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal." (v 1) They now withdraw to Bethsaida and thousands followed Him. He proceeds to feed the 5000.
What this means to me:
Jesus does not turn away those that are drawn to Him!.
John 9:11
He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed and received my sight."
What's happening:
Jesus has healed a man born blind and his neighbors want to know how he received his sight.
What this means to me:
As Jesus explained to His disciples immediately before healing the man (v 4) "It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him." Let the works of God be displayed in me!
