Thank God It's Friday: Thank God for Mr. C!

OK, I'll admit, I've been neglecting my blog. Today, I return with another "Thank God It's Friday" post. I hope you like it!

The other night after getting the boys to bed, I plopped myself down on the couch and turned on the TV. It was one of those times where there wasn't anything particular I wanted to watch so I surfed a little bit and settled on a Happy Days rerun. Happy Days was one of my favorite shows when I was kid (it started when I was 8 and it's last episode had it's original airing when I was 19!). Like most boys in the 70s, I thought Fonzie was cool. At the time, I probably was a closer to being like Potsie and Ralph than was to being like the Fonz.

Anyway, the episode in question was one where Howard Cunningham was celebrating his 45th birthday and feared that he hadn't accomplished anything and thus he wanted to run away to Tahiti. It hit me like a ton of bricks, thanks to the timelessness of TV reruns, Howard Cunningham - the sometimes a bit grouchy or cranky dad on Happy Days - was now my peer. My next birthday will be my 45th. I am glad that I don't need counseling from the wise Arthur Fonzarelli to make me realize that my life has counted for something. I thank God for the many blessings He's given me and that every day of my life was written in His book before even one came to be. Like Mr. C, I've got a wife that I love, two wonderful kids, and have had the same job for a long time. You may not see me at a hardware convention and the coolest kid in town doesn't live upstairs, but I am glad for what I have. My peer Howard Cunnigham only reminded me of that fact. So I proudly say "Thank God for Mr. C!"

Notes to my son

Today my older son celebrated his 10th birthday. My wife and I each wrote him five notes (for a total of ten). Here are my five (slightly edited for the blog):

  • One of the moments that I've been most proud of you was this past Saturday when Mr. Ross called you up at the men's meeting. I, like Mr. Ross, desire to see you grow up to be a godly man who serves God in his local church. I, like Mr. Ross, love the fact that you have a servant's heart and willingly help out with setting things up and are sometimes even a leader with the other boys in getting them to help out too! Keep it up!
  • I love how you love to listen to praise and worship music and like to be involved with the singing during Kids Zone. I am excited that you desire to be involved with leading worship. Sure, starting to learn how to play guitar may seem hard, but stick with it because I know that playing guitar to praise God is a wonderful thing to do!
  • I love how you love God's word. We read it every day and when we're nearing the end of a book in your Bible, you always know what book you want to read next!
  • I love to see you build things whether it be with Legos or something else. You get an idea in your head and you make it happen. Then when you are finished, you are proud of what you have done.
  • I love it when I have to go do something and you want to come with me just to be with me. I like being with you.

Thank God It's Friday: Thank God for Guitar Center

OK, in the last week I've made two purchases at GC. While in Virginia Beach, I purchased a Laguna LD2 7/8 size guitar for my older son.

Today, I went by the GC in Fairfax, VA and bought myself an Ibanez SR540 Zebra wood 4-string bass. The one pictured isn't mine, but I'll try and post a picture of mine soon.

With two purchases in less than a week, how can I not say "Thank God for Guitar Center!"
